Chapter 12

“I need you to check someone out for me.”

Leaning back in my clinic’s office chair, I gazed at the files on my desk without truly seeing them. In spite of both Whitney and I agreeing her ex sent the text to mess with her head, or to get her back, I decided I needed more information on the dude.

So, I called on an old friend who just happened to work for the F.B.I.

“Branching out from general practice, King, old buddy,” Jeff said with a chuckle. “Going into investigative journalism, or become a private dick?”

“Both might pay better.”

“As a doctor, you should get paid very well, indeed. So, what’s up?”

“I hired a nanny, Jeff,” I replied. “Nice lady, you’d like her.”

“You need a background check on her?”

“No, I already got one. But she has an ex who may or may not be into something criminal. He sent her a text saying she’s on the wrong side of some bad people.”

“That’s perfectly vague.”

“I know. Can you run his name through your computers? See if he’s got a history with bad people?”

“What’s his name?”

“Vincent Robards,” I told him. “He’s a real estate lawyer in my building.”

“I trust you haven’t gone to bust him up?”

“Now would I do that?”

“Yeah. I can already tell you like this nanny. And like her a lot.”

I laughed. “You got me.”

“I’m an investigator. I listen to the right things. Let me get back to you on this guy.”

“Thanks, man.”

“You owe me.”

“Yup.”

He clicked off, leaving me to tap my phone against my teeth, wondering if his computers would reveal anything. If Whitney’s wolfish ex was involved with anything criminal, then why would he reveal his hand by texting her? If he was an honest attorney, then why would he think someone was after her?

“Unless he overheard or saw something.”

An uneasy thought wriggled into my mind. Could Whitney herself be involved in anything dirty? I discounted that almost immediately, but it nagged at me. I was a decent judge of character, and unless Whitney was a consummate actress, she didn’t have a deceitful bone in her. Maybe Whitney witnessed something but doesn’t know what she saw.

That thought made some sense.

“She could have come here to see him; saw two people together and didn’t realize what they were doing? Overheard something she shouldn’t have, but doesn’t know the significance of it? Shit, I don’t know.”

All this speculation, and I was willing to bet it all boiled down to Vince messing with her head. That in truth, he wanted her back and thought to frighten her into returning to him. When romance didn’t work, try intimidation. With a sigh, I opened a patient’s file on my desk and went back to work.

Jeff called me back just before I was to visit a patient in one of my exam rooms. “Hey, dude.”

“I got nothing on this guy, King,” Jeff said. “He’s clean. Not under investigation for anything, no arrests, no warrants, nada.”

“That still tells me something,” I replied.

“What?”

“He’s trying to scare her into going back to him.
